The South China University of Technology in Guagzhou, China held a national modeling contest in which participating graduate students were given the problem "The classification and recognition of neuron with morphology". Contestants had to create algorithms to classify neurons based on their geometric morphology and NeuroMorpho.Org was the online source for neuron reconstruction data.
The contest was held September 17-20, 2010 and resulted in increased traffic to the website; on the first day of the contest NeuroMorpho.Org had over 12,000 visitors and the number of downloads at the end of the contest crossed the 1.5 million mark. During this period NeuroMorpho.Org received hundreds of emails from contestants with specific questions. To answer their questions and to help contestants navigate the website with more ease, the team created a Help page overnight, dedicated exclusively to this contest. This Help page provided general information about the reconstructions, details about extracted measurements using L-Measure, and links to relevant publications and various tools used by NeuroMorpho.Org.
Details about the contest problems can be downloaded here. More information about the contest can be found here http://www.shumo.com/home/.
